Google fires 48 people for sexual harassment

Google fires 48 people for sexual harassment

That golden parachute apparently came after credible allegations of sexual misconduct. Upon his departure from the industry giant, Andy Rubin was still given a $150 million stock grant, to be paid out over several years, along with a $90 million exit package.

His ex-wife in her lawsuit shared a screenshot of an email sent by Rubin to one woman, in which he asks her to become his "property". The woman's accusation was investigated and deemed credible by Google, and former Google CEO Larry Page asked him to resign. However, it did not directly address the allegations of the payout to Rubin, or the fact that Google continued to maintain a relationship with him by investing in his new company.

A Google employee accused then-Android chief Andy Rubin of coercing her into performing oral sex in a hotel room in 2013, the New York Times reported.

This is the third time Google has protected an executive accused of sexual misconduct and paid them millions on their way out the door, but the amount paid to Rubin is much higher than previous cases.

However, Pichai and Naughton were quick to add that Google "is dead serious" about making the company a "safe and inclusive workplace".

A copy of an email sent to employees Thursday by Sundar Pichai, CEO, and Eileen Naughton, VP People Operations and provided to KTVU by a Google spokesperson stated, "Today's story in the New York Times was hard to read". None of the dismissed staff received an exit package.

"I'd like to think Google will clean up its act if anything to avoid having a retention problem with their female employees".

Facebook ad archive outs top spending political advertisers in the US
Facebook has launched an ad archive report, showing how much companies and political groups have spent on Facebook advertising. Also among the top spenders is the oil company Exxon Mobil, which has spent nearly $2 million on ads on Facebook since May.

Rubin's representative, Sam Singer, told Bloomberg that Rubin left of his own accord in 2014. He goes on to say that 13 of these people were senior managers or above.

Later, Rubin tweeted that the story was a "smear campaign".

According to some of those interviewed by the paper, Google was flexible in how it enforced its sexual harassment policy.

Allegations of sexual misconduct also have resulted in the resignations of venture capitalists and executives and triggered an ongoing overhaul at ride-hailing company, Uber.

Drummond is the current chief legal officer of Google parent Alphabet as well as the chairman of CapitalG.

The company has reiterated that it won't tolerate any kind of inappropriate conduct and strict action will be taken against the culprits.

In the letter, no mention of the Times report was made; instead, Pichai assured employees that Google had established confidential anonymous channels to report misconduct, and that all vice presidents and senior vice presidents were required to disclose any relationships with coworkers.
