A controversial artwork created by AI has hauled in $435000 at auction

The sale of the portrait signalled the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage, Christie's said.

An artificial intelligence designed artwork has sold for 45 times over its estimate at a Christie's auction in NY on Thursday.

The painting was expected to only sell for between $7,000 and $10,000, making the $432,500 haul almost 45 times its high estimate.

"Edmond de Belamy" is the brainchild of French collective Obvious, whose aim is to use artificial intelligence to democratise art. It was produced using an algorithm and a data set of 15,000 portraits painted between the 14th and 20th Centuries. The former generates its own art based on what it has been exposed to, while the Discriminator compares those works to human-made pieces. The process continued and Discriminator could not differentiate the paintings and thus they decided that it was good enough to be sold. The other artworks are being sold online by Obvious Art for 10,000 euros on its website. One of the members, Hugo Caselles-Dupré, discovered the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) class of algorithms while working on his Ph.D.in machine learning. Obvious used a "scraper' program to collect images from Wikiart to train its neural net and create warped versions that imitated the style of the originals". Dupre said that if the artist is the one that holds the vision and wants to share a message, then the authorship would go to Obvious.

"I know it's a debate that's going on quite widely".

Four Jaguars players arrested in London after nightclub incident
It looks like a few of the team's players might have gotten themselves into trouble the day before the event. The Jacksonville Jaguars are over in London this week to take on the Philadelphia Eagles .

The portrait is a painting of a character named Edmund, a part of the fictitious Belamy family.

The buyer of the painting was an anonymous telephone bidder who managed to outbid five other interested collectors.

Since the story about Belamy hit the mainstream, Obvious has tried to give credit to Barrat and Goodfellow, but the greater AI art community has scorned them as being amateurs who lucked out with someone else's code.

It's not the first time AI has been used to create art.

For Lloyd, this is just the beginning of AI art, he said.
