Stephen Hawking's wheelchair and thesis up for sale as part of auction

An online auction announced October 22, 2018, by auctioneer Christie's features 22 items from Hawking, including his doctoral thesis on the origins of the universe.

Items belonging to the late physicist Stephen Hawking, including one of his earliest motorized wheelchairs, will be put up for auction beginning on Halloween.

Aside from some of Hawking's possessions being offered, possessions from other famous scientists, including Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein will be included in the auction. The document was signed with shaky handwriting, as Hawking finished it after beginning to show symptoms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which eventually left him paralyzed.

Upon his passing in March, Stephen Hawking bequeathed a scientific legacy that will descend to new researchers and theoreticians for generations to come. The thesis includes a signature and a handwritten note from Hawking confirming that the copy is original.

Hawking's wheelchair will also be auctioned off, with the proceeds going toward the Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neuron Disease Association.

"The lots selected for sale highlight Professor Hawking's remarkable achievements in science alongside his unique personality and inspirational life story", Thomas Venning, Head of the Books and Manuscripts department, said in a statement.

Dyson will build its first electric vehicle in Singapore
Dyson , the British company best known for innovative vacuum cleaners , says it will build its electric vehicle in Singapore . The company plans to invest roughly £2 billion ($3.7 billion) on the project, most of which will be spent in Singapore.

"Stephen Hawking's rather mischievous attitude to piloting his wheelchair became legendary", according to the lot description."Having run over Prince Charles' toes during a meeting in 1977, he is said to have regretted not doing the same to the then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher".

How about an assortment of medals and awards given between 1975 and 1999, estimated at $13,000-$19,500? A Brief History of Time would go on to sell more than 10 million copies, and each one came with Sagan's full endorsement: he authored the book's introduction.

A bomber jacket Hawking wore in a 2016 documentary, Stephen Hawking's Favorite Places for the video-on-demand streaming service CuriosityStream, has the lowest starting bid, at £100.

Daughter Lucy Hawking has noted that, through the auction, fans of the scientist will get the chance to become owners of the relics, reminding about the odd life of a theoretical physicist.

"It was in 1983 that Hawking first suggested the idea of a popular work on cosmology, which would explain modern physics and astronomy in non-specialist terms to a popular readership", Christie's states.
