Melania Trump's plane forced to land after smoke fills cabin

A plane carrying Melania Trump was forced to land after a "haze of smoke" was spotted on board, according to United States media reports.

According to preliminary reports, the plane had just taken off from the air base when Secret Service agents leaped up and ran to the front of the cabin. Reports show that smoke and burning smells became overwhelming, forcing members of the press pool to hold wet towels over their faces.

Shortly after, a thin haze of smoke was visible and there was a smell of something burning in the cabin.

The plane landed at the military base, and the first lady was seen getting off of the plane. One staffer told reporters that the cause of the smoke was a malfunctioning communications unit.

"Everything is fine and everyone is safe", a spokesperson for Mrs Trump has said, adding that a "minor mechanical issue" was to blame.

Trump was on her way to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia to meet with families affected by neonatal abstinence syndrome. The first lady boarded a separate smaller aircraft soon afterwards and continued forward with her trip.
