Saudi Arabia ready to concede writer was killed in consulate

Saudi Arabia on Sunday threatened to retaliate for any sanctions imposed against it after President Donald Trump said the oil-rich kingdom deserves "severe punishment" if it is responsible for the disappearance and suspected murder of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi. Trump announced he'd dispatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the kingdom - and anywhere else necessary - to get to the bottom of the apparent demise of Khashoggi, a Saudi who had been living and working in the United States. Representatives for the White House and the US Department of State could not be immediately reached for any further comment.

Joe Lieberman, a former Democratic senator from CT who became an independent, said the disappearance and suspected murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi are "troubling", but until facts are established, the United States shouldn't destroy its relationship with Saudi Arabia.

Turkish officials have said they fear a Saudi assassination team that flew into and out of Turkey on October 2 killed and dismembered Khashoggi.

The Saudi government is preparing to say that the death of prominent journalist Jamal Khashoggi was the result of an interrogation by Saudi operatives that went wrong, two sources close to the Saudi kingdom tell CBS News.

Saudi media on Monday echoed the kingdom's hard-line threat of retaliation for any sanctions over the disappearance and alleged death of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, as demands grew for boycotts of the same global brands once courted by the kingdom.

But the president has also said "we would be punishing ourselves" by canceling arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

A Turkish diplomatic source earlier said a joint Turkish-Saudi team would search the building - the last place Khashoggi was seen before he vanished on October 2.

Sears aims to close up to 150 stores in bankruptcy
The Sears collapse has been a long time coming, but it's still going to go off like a bomb - perhaps especially so in real estate. The Sears bankruptcy means that unsecured creditors, or suppliers and pensioners, will be last in line to get paid.

Asked if he had reviewed the purported recording of Khashoggi's killing, Trump told reporters on Saturday: "I have not".

Saudi Arabia has launched an internal investigation into the episode after an instruction from King Salman, father of the crown prince, Mohamed bin Salman.

The king, Trump reported, suggested it could have been "rogue killers". Germany, France and Britain also jointly called for a "credible investigation".

But on Sunday Saudi Arabia said it rejected political and economic "threats" over the missing journalist and would respond to any punitive action "with a bigger one".

Rubio said U.S. -Saudi relations may need to be "completely revised" and stressed the U.S. would lose credibility on human rights if the Trump administration remained silent. "We are following the situation closely, and unless a substantially different set of facts emerges, I won't be attending the FII conference in Riyadh".

"This, I think, depends on the crown prince".
