Sanath Jayasuriya, former Sri Lanka captain, charged with two corruption breaches

Former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya has hit back at the ICC's corruption charges levelled against him, saying he has always conducted himself with integrity.

ICC's decision to charge the batting hero and former chief selector under the apex body's anti-corruption code created a huge buzz in the cricket fraternity and gave rise to quite a lot of speculations.

With the ACU investigations still ongoing, it is possible that more figures involved in Sri Lankan cricket could be charged under the anti-corruption code in the coming weeks and months.

Jayasuriya, a former Sri Lanka captain, was chairman of selectors before standing down as part of a mass resignation previous year.

The ICC had released a statement earlier in the day, charging Jayasuriya on two counts: "Article 2.4.6 Failure or refusal, without compelling justification, to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the ACU, including failure to provide accurately and completely any information and/or documentation requested by the ACU as part of such investigation".

Representatives for the White House and the US Department of State could not be immediately reached for any further comment. Asked if he had reviewed the purported recording of Khashoggi's killing, Trump told reporters on Saturday: "I have not".

Jayasuriya does, though, say: "I have always conducted myself with integrity and transparency with matters concerning the sport and will continue to do so. I am under strict legal advise that no comment is to be made in respect of the above charges as such a course would offend the ICC Rules", Jayasuriya said in a statement.

The investigation led to Galle curator Jayananda Warnaweera being banned for three years in 2016 for failing to cooperate with the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

Jayasuriya has been a chairman of selectors since his retirement from Test cricket in December 2007 and limited-overs cricket in June 2011, and has also been elected as a member of parliament. They were laid following more than a year of ACU focus on Sri Lanka's 2017 ODI series against Zimbabwe. "Naturally as part of this we are talking to a number of people". In 445 ODIs, he scored 13430 runs including 28 hundreds.

Jayasuriya's response comes following the comments from former England captain Nasser Hussain, who suggested that Jayasuriya's charges would be followed by more high-profile names.
