Minnesota Children Diagnosed With Rare 'Polio-Like' Illness

We have not confirmed the cause for the majority of these cases. Officials have not found a specific cause for the illness.

AFM affects the spinal cord.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it has seen an increasing number of people across the US with the serious condition in the past four years. Polio is the most significant disease caused by an enterovirus.

Most affected by the disorder have a sudden onset of arm or leg weakness, as well as a loss of muscle tone and reflexes to the affected limb. This is very alarming as it is usually seen in only one case per year in that state.

Now there is no treatment for AFM, and the exact cause is unknown. "The results come back that he had an abnormality through his entire spinal cord", said Elaine.

It's so rare that less than one in a million will get AFM, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

And in 2018 alone, 38 new cases of AFM in 16 states across the country were confirmed by the CDC.

Between August 2014 and August 2018, the CDC received 362 cases of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM).

Minnesota officials said they typically see one case of AFM per year.

The minister said investigators had spoken to Marinova's family and friends and added: "There is no apparent link to her work". And even some of Marinova's fellow journalists were not convinced that she was killed because of her reporting.

It added that it was consulting a neurologist in each case "to better understand this illness".

Even with extensive lab testing, AFM is hard to diagnose, because it so similar to other conditions, including poliovirus, West Nile virus and adenoviruses, the CDC reports.

Karen Hacker says medical professionals are still trying to figure out what causes AFM.

"Most of the cases [of AFM] that CDC has learned about have been in children", the CDC writes on its website.

He is advising parents to take their children to the emergency room if they notice any focal weakness.

Colorado has had 14 AFM cases so far this year, state epidemiologist Rachel Herlihy, MD, MPH, told NBC News.

"There is obviously a lot of concern about it, but it is rare", Griffith said. After a diagnosis is made, health providers and investigators try to retrace the path of the illness to its source. "And then there is lag time until the spinal inflammation".

The regular cases in Minnesota are of children under age 10. Doctors stress that the early signs of AFM should be recognized and treatment should be started as soon as possible to prevent from severity of disease. "It's a very devastating situation" for the children and their families, she said. It has, however, been linked to a number of common germs that cause colds, sore throats and respiratory infections as well as to other viruses, including poliovirus, non-polio enteroviruses and mosquito-borne viruses, such as the Zika virus.

"We don't yet have any effective treatment for the virus or for the condition", Messacar said.
