Chief justice refers ethics complaints against...

On Oct. 6, Kavanagh was confirmed to the court by a vote of 50-48 in the Senate, a slim victory after multiple women had accused him of sexual misconduct.

The Washington Post spoke with University of Pittsburgh law professor Arthur Hellman about the likely next step.

The Denver-based 10th Circuit Court now handling the complaints is led by Chief Judge Timothy M. Tymkovich, who was nominated to the bench by former President George W. Bush.

The specifics of the complaints remain unknown, but people familiar with the matter say that they accuse Kavanaugh of misleading the public, and criticize his attitude and lack of political impartiality during his confirmation hearings.

Kavanaugh said on Monday he was starting his new job without bitterness, seeking to set a new tone after the divisive process.

Jamal Khashoggi: Trump condemns Saudi writer's disappearance
Investigators have not found his body but have video surveillance showing Khashoggi entering the consulate October 2. He also said the USA was working "very closely" with Turkey, "and I think we'll get to the bottom of it".

Grassley told Fox News on Tuesday that the committee would not take up a Supreme Court nomination in an election year if he is still the chairman.

It's possible the complaints will never be investigated if the lower-court judges determine the judiciary's ethics rules don't give them jurisdiction over a Supreme Court justice. He did not immediately move to refer the filings to another appeals court.

Fresh off the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, questions arose about what Republicans might do if another vacancy opens on the court in 2020 - and Republican leadership doesn't agree on what they'd do in that situation.

This means that the complaints made against him are effectively confidential and can be dismissed without releasing the details of the complaints to the public.

Henderson said members of the general public had filed the complaints. The judicial council of that court publicly announced it was closing its investigation because Kozinski had retired, saying that because he "can no longer perform any judicial duties, he does not fall within the scope of persons who can be investigated".
