President Trump is coming to your smartphone-and not just on Twitter

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Thursday it will test a new emergency notification system next week that allows President Donald Trump to send emergency messages directly to US cellphones.

News reports that next Thursday FEMA will perform its first test of the system which, when fully implemented, can send a message immediately to more than 100 mobile carriers.

You don't need to take any action for the test.

No one with a cell phone can opt out of presidential alerts.

"Presidential Alerts are to be used during a national emergency, though none have been sent to date".

The WEA test will be broadcast over the course of about 30 minutes and sound the same as an AMBER Alert.

Federal officials previously announced that the government has a system for sending messages to all cellphone users in the event of a serious weather situation or other emergency. During this time, cell phones that are switched on and within range of an active cell tower should be capable of receiving the test message.

Why FEMA watches the Waffle House menu during hurricanes
When a storm is completely devastating, Waffle House will close , usually because the building has been destroyed. The " Waffle House Index " isn't as well known as some of your favorite rhymes, but it is fairly reliable.

Emergency alerts will also continue to be available on NOAA Weather Radio, news broadcasts, the Emergency Alert System on radio and TV programs and via outdoor sirens.

The Wireless Emergency Alert system message test is being carried out by FEMA in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, FEMA said in a statement posted on its website Thursday.

In the event of widespread severe weather or another significant event on September 20, the test will be pushed back to October 3, FEMA said.

"This is a great idea and an incredible use of technology to reach everybody if they're in harm's way", Karen North, the director of the Annenberg Digital Social Media program at the University of Southern California, told NBC News.

Previous EAS national tests were conducted in November 2011, September 2016, and September 2017 in collaboration with the FCC, broadcasters, and emergency management officials in recognition of FEMA's National Preparedness Month. The systems allows the president the "communications capability to address the nation during a national emergency".

You've probably already heard of the Emergency Alert System, which sends a national public warning via radio and television in the event of an emergency and conducts periodic tests.
