Hurricane Florence looms over East Coast — WHAT'S HAPPENING

Hurricane Florence is forecast to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane when it nears the US coast, while some weakening is expected on Thursday, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its latest advisory on Wednesday.

Recent tracking maps show Florence stalking near the coast line, increasing the chances of flooding across four states.

Leaders of the states in the path of the storm have warned people all week to evacuate the most susceptible areas.

So far, it's estimate more than 1.7 million Americans have heeded the warnings about Hurricane Florence.

At 1000GMT on 12 September, Florence had maximum sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph), the equivalent of a category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, and a minimum central pressure of 946 hPa, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

A high-definition video camera outside the space station captured stark and sobering views of Hurricane Florence, at that time a Category 4 storm.

At least 88,000 people were without power in North Carolina with the brunt of the storm yet to come, according to the state's emergency management agency.

It's unclear exactly how many people fled, but more than 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to clear out. "We are ready. We're as ready as anybody's ever been".

"Protection of life is the absolute highest priority", he added.

Helene, which has been downgraded from a hurricane, is among a glut of tropical storms brewing in the region, with mass evacuations under way in southern U.S. states as Hurricane Florence barrels across Virginia and the Carolinas.

"This rainfall would produce catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding", the NHC said.

Duke Energy, the nation's No. 2 power company, said Florence could knock out electricity to three-quarters of its 4 million customers in the Carolinas, and outages could last for weeks.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter to issue his own warning.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency "in light of the storm's forecasted southward track after making landfall". "I encourage Georgians to be prepared for the inland effects of the storm as well as the ensuing storm surge in coastal areas".

Emergency declarations were in force in Georgia, South and North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

In Wilmington, Solange Iliou Thompson closed down her restaurant, Indochine, because all of her employees had left the city.

Holly Waters, a retired special education teacher from Wilmington, said she was happy to have a place to go to relax before the storm worsened. "There's nobody left to work".

"I've never been one to leave for a storm but this one kind of had me spooked", Epperson said. "If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have minded staying here". The slow forward motion means Florence will batter the area with heavy rainfall, producing up to 40 inches in coastal North Carolina and northeastern SC.
