First Hurricane Florence deaths: mother, baby killed by tree

That amount will cause catastrophic flooding throughout the Wilmington region and shatter rainfall records, according to the weather service.

But it still brought torrential rain. "You don't want slow, but that's what we have". "Calling someone to come get me".

Florence has been downgraded to a tropical storm by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) but authorities warned the danger was far from over, predicting that "life-threatening storm surges and strong winds" would persist through the night.

The NHC said parts of North and SC may get as much as 40 inches of rain.

Along the coast, floodwaters have been hitting inland towns near rivers that normally discharge into the ocean.

Hurricane Florence is battering North Carolina with wild winds and a powerful storm surge.

Last year, Hurricane Matthew left 1.5 million Duke customers without power and cost the company $125 million in power line repairs, The Weather Channel reports.

Billy Sample, a resident stuck in the town of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, said Friday night: "The height of the storm didn't feel as bad as it is now".

"What happens is that we rescue some people and then we find out there are still more who need it", Outlaw said.

More than 1.7 million people evacuated this week, leaving behind homes, schools and precious belongings.

Hurricane Florence making landfall in Carolinas
In the state's Pender County, a woman died of a heart attack; paramedics trying to reach her were blocked by debris. Florence was one of two major storms threatening millions of people on opposite sides of the world.

Florence was expected to make landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina, at midday, and forecasters said its size meant it could batter the U.S. East Coast with hurricane-force winds for almost a full day. "Plant procedures call for the reactors to be shut down before the anticipated onset of hurricane-force winds", agency spokesman Joey Ledford told CNN.

There's still a threat from rising tides, Risty-Davis says.

Neighbour Adam Sparks said he noticed emergency responders arrive at the house across the street right around when his power went out and the storm was intensifying.

Forecasters said Florence's surge could cover all but a sliver of the Carolina coast under as much as 11 feet (3.4 meters) of sea water.

Since midnight, peak wind gusts reached 32 miles per hour in Raleigh and 47 miles per hour in Fayetteville. At the city's airport, the wind was gusting at 91 miles per hour. Florence's maximum sustained winds were clocked on Thursday at 105 miles per hour (165 kph). The storm, which made landfall Friday morning as a Category 1, is expected to continue to soak the area throughout the weekend.

Reports out of Wilmington, North Carolina, said that the outer bands of wind and rain from Florence, a Category 2 storm with 105 miles per hour winds, are hitting North Carolina.

The storm is likely to bring significant rain to the Carolinas, where some places could see upwards of 20 inches, the update said.

After creeping inland, Florence is expected to head west before looping up toward Tennessee and Kentucky early next week. Thousands of soldiers from their National Guard forces have been mobilized.

The city of Jacksonville's statement says people have been moved to the city's public safety center as officials work to find a more permanent shelter.

Officials in several states have declared states of emergency, including in the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia and Maryland, where coastal areas are still recovering from summer storms. That advisory came out on August 30, when Florence was developing near the Cabo Verde Islands across the Atlantic. Florence has been a odd tropical cyclone since it materialised in the distant Atlantic and took an unusual path toward the mainland United States.
