Lexus wants drivers to see better with digital side mirrors

The seventh-generation Lexus ES will be available with a new exterior camera system, which replaces the traditional set of wing mirrors.

Some new features touted by automakers ventually turn out to be novelties that never make it into production, but one feature manufacturers have been putting on their concepts for decades that hasn't gone away is now making it into production on the recently redesigned 2019 Lexus ES.

Like the new Audi e-tron, which will offer a similar side camera mirror setup, but not in the USA due to regulatory obstacles, Lexus is only offering this system in its home market for now (European regulations also allow cameras as mirrors). The cameras in the Digital Outer Mirrors transmit the images onto 5-inch display monitors located inside the cabin at the base of the front pillars. In 2016, technology supplier Ichikoh Industries forecasted that by 2023, 29 percent of the Japanese market would have cameras and monitors in place of regular mirrors, about 2.3 million vehicles.

Boateng called Mourinho to turn down Man United
He told the Bild that he had "enquiries" from Man United and PSG but opted to remain in Germany because everything was "in place". Tottenham were heavily linked with the player throughout the summer, while Chelsea were also said to be keen.

The Digital Outer Mirrors displays what is on the left, right and rear of the vehicle on a monitor inside the cabin that is stacked below the A-pillar. On the serious side of things though, by swapping traditional bulky side mirrors for something much smaller means less drag is created, which ultimately leads to improved fuel economy.

The system's small cameras result in better forward visibility (no large side mirrors to block the view) and reduction of wind noise.

While these benefits are all fine and dandy, let's just hope they're flexible enough to fold in when absent-mind drivers or pedestrians decide to bump into them.
