Jeff Bezos says Trump is wrong to 'demonize the media'

Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Inc's founder and the world's richest person, said on Thursday he will commit $2 billion to helping homeless families and starting pre-schools for low-income communities.

More than a year after putting out an open call for suggestions about what to do with his spectacular wealth, Jeff Bezos has come back with a decision. The fund will be split between Day 1 Families Fund and Day 1 Academies Fund.

It's not yet known what his preschools will look like except that they will be based on the teaching philosophy of Maria Montessori, which focuses on play-based learning that caters to individuality and social-emotional development.

The Amazon chief's wealth has become problematic for some.

So, Jeff, from one member of the human species to another, I implore you to not only engage in philanthropy but also try to understand how you can fix Amazon's problems to set a better example. Naturally, it was easy for Sawant and others to target Amazon, but 500 businesses would have been subject to the tax, which is about 3 percent of the city's companies. City leaders quickly rescinded the levy. The fund's vision statement comes from non-profit Mary's Place in Seattle: no child sleeps outside.

In addition to millions in cash, both non-profits have been granted prime real estate in Amazon building spaces to do their work.

Bezos has faced criticism for his absence from the Giving Pledge, a commitment by the world's wealthiest individuals and families to donate more than half their fortunes to good causes. "Just do the work, that's Marty's phrase", Bezos said.

In the education realm, Bezos is tipping his hat to the intensely private and media-shy Bezos Family Foundation that is run by his parents.

Since then, he and his wife have built the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which had an endowment of US$51 billion at the end of 2017 and pledges to spend all its resources within 20 years of its founders' deaths.

"The media", Bezos added, "is going to be fine".

In a tweet last June, Bezos asked the public for ideas about where he should give his money.

In January, Bezos donated $33 million for college scholarships to "Dreamers"- childhood undocumented immigrants allowed to stay in the country under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
