Trump disputes Puerto Rico hurricane death toll

Trump disputes Puerto Rico hurricane death toll

The study says the original estimates were so low because doctors on the island had not been trained to properly classify deaths after a natural disaster.

A report published in May by the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health said up to 4,600 people were killed and an investigation published in December by the Center for Investigative Journalism found the actual death toll exceeded 1,000 people.

The president added that his administration "did an unappreciated great job in Puerto Rico, even though an inaccessible island with very poor electricity and a totally incompetent Mayor of San Juan".

A sweeping report from George Washington University released last month estimated there were 2,975 "excess deaths" in the six months after the storm made landfall in Puerto Rico in September 2017.

"Mr Trump you can try and bully us with your tweets BUT WE KNOW OUR LIVES MATTER", she tweeted.

"You will never take away our self respect".

Yulín Cruz later called Trump 'delusional, paranoid, and unhinged from any sense of reality'.

Ahead of this weekend's incoming hurricane that's hitting the East Coast, President Trump tried to reassure the people earlier this week by stating some bold lies about the relief efforts they provided for the last hurricane in Puerto Rico, Hurricane Maria. "If you're in Florence's path and considering riding it out, your president just said that a hurricane response where 3,000 die is his measure of success". The death toll from the hurricane is now believed to be around 3,000, as many residents did not have access to basic necessities such as clean drinking water.

Where does the official death toll come from?

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico", Trump tweeted (see tweets below).

"Those were not needed during the response phase and were not distributed by the governor of Puerto Rico or FEMA for that reason", FEMA deputy administrator Daniel Kaniewski told "CBS This Morning".

A photographer working for a Puerto Rican police agency reportedly caught a glimpse of a stockpile of bottled water on a runaway in the city of Ceiba.

The president praised the response to the series of storms that battered the United States a year ago, saying, "I think Puerto Rico was an incredible, unsung success". But Trump contested these findings on Thursday.
