California Commits to 100 Percent Renewable Energy By 2045

California's governor has signed a bill setting a 100% clean energy goal for the state and issued an executive order setting a target to achieve carbon neutrality, both by 2045.

At a signing ceremony in the state capital Sacramento, Mr Brown vowed to meet the terms of the Paris agreement and to "continue down that path to transition our economy to zero carbon emissions". The legislation requires retail electricity suppliers within the state to secure 100 percent of their power from renewables or zero-emissions sources by 2045 and updates the state's existing renewable portfolio standard (RPS).

"Continuing to drill and frack for oil and gas is not only counterproductive to efforts to meaningfully address climate change - it also poisons frontline communities, including the many people who work for the fossil fuel industry", Greenpeace said in a statement.

He also signed a bill, SB100, making the state's electricity completely emissions-free by 2045.

Brown's signing came days before he hosts a gathering of local, global and business leaders in San Francisco to highlight the urgency of addressing climate change. Since 2010, California has procured more than 1,500 MW of new energy storage capacity; North American energy users and utilities have collectively procured over 2 GW of advanced energy storage projects to date.

"It's not going to be easy and will not be immediate, but it must be done", Brown said.

"California is committed to doing whatever is necessary to meet the existential threat of climate change", Brown said during signing of SB100. The summit aims to secure commitments from cities, states, provinces, countries and corporations to reduce greenhouse gases that the world's leading scientific organizations say are trapping heat in the atmosphere and warming the planet.

The renewable energy measure would require California's utilities to generate 60 percent of their energy from wind, solar and other specific renewable sources by 2030. Kevin de León, a Los Angeles Democrat who carried SB 100, said.

Renewable energy experts have looked to batteries that can store solar energy generated in the afternoon as one solution, but the technology is not ready for wide-scale deployment.

Here's what we know about this new era for California.

While California has been a leader on reducing the amount of electricity it gets from burning fossil fuels, the state has struggled to be as forward-leaning in reducing the greenhouse gas pollution spewed from cars and trucks.

Monday's law goes further, saying the last 40 percent of the 100 percent total can come from "carbon-free" sources, including large dams, nuclear power and even natural gas-fired power plants, if they can capture and store the carbon in the ground, which so far is an unproven technology.
