Williams argues with chair umpire; Osaka wins US Open final

The final was marred by Williams' second set outburst after chair umpire Carlos Ramos warned her for receiving coaching in the second game.

After being broken to go down 4-3, Williams smashed her racket which led to a point penalty. Eventually, Willams called Ramos "a thief", drawing a third violation — and costing her a game. She then yelled at the umpire and demanded an apology for the previous violation.

"You will never be on another court of mine as long as you live".

Williams said. "That is not right".

"It doesn't really feel that real right now".

Serena Williams was upset with her code violation in the women's singles final against Naomi Osaka at the US Open.

"The thing is, like, I don't know what happened on the court".

'I was on the far other end, so I'm not sure. "I'm just letting you know", a fired-up Williams told the umpire at Flushing Meadows in NY.

"I don't want to be rude", Williams said in an ESPN post-interview. I said, 'I want to be like her.' [I might still have it] in a folder at home or something.

The US Open Will Have All-Black Women’s Final For Second Year In A Row

At that point, Williams called for referee Brian Earley, who came to the court with Grand Slam supervisor Donna Kelso. Let's give everyone the credit where credit is due.

When it was Osaka's turn she seemed at a loss, apologising to the crowd.

Osaka and Keys, last year's beaten finalist, are both players built in the same power mould as Williams but the most impressive thing about Osaka's performance was the rest of her game and especially the poise she showed to save all 13 break points she faced. "You took a point from me.' That's exactly what Serena did", USA Today columnist and ABC News commentator Christine Brennan told WTOP.

She will now meet 23-time slam singles champion Williams, who won her first title in NY 19 years ago and thumped Anastasija Sevastova prior to Osaka's win over Keys on Thursday.

She was issued a second on court coaching violation six games later after smashing her racket Frustration continued to boil over- at both the violations and with her own tennis.

"To come from that", Williams said, "in the hospital bed, not being able to move and walk and do anything, now only a year later, I'm not training, but I'm actually in these finals, in two in a row".

Williams is referencing an incident from last week when French player Alizé Cornet was penalized for briefly taking her shirt off mid-match.

Alison Hughes will become the second female umpire to chair a U.S Open men's singles final. Osaka never let Williams back-and-forth with Ramos distract her, never wavered from playing terrific tennis.

While Williams refused to read too much into that result considering she was competing in only her second tournament following the birth of Alexis Olympia, the win should offer some added measure of belief for Osaka, who has not been shy about describing her admiration for the American.
