Tesla shares plummet after Musk pours heart out to NYT

It's not clear why they're bothering Musk now more than before, but it might be because Tesla's hard year (Model 3 production delays and Model X crash that has dropped stock prices since March) made more short-sellers turn to Tesla, or because Musk's own activities (say, a positive quarterly earnings call) have cost the short-sellers huge sums.

"It was excruciating." Among the struggles Musk says he has dealt with due to running his multiple companies are failing health and almost missing his brother's wedding in order to meet Tesla production targets. In the interview the executive describes not leaving the Tesla factory for days at a time, a 120 hour work week, nearly missing his brother's wedding, and not taking a break for longer than a week since 2001. "Over the past 15 years, Elon's leadership of the Tesla team has caused Tesla to grow from a small startup to having hundreds of thousands of cars on the road that customers love, employing tens of thousands of people around the world, and creating significant shareholder value in the process".

A very telling moment in the interview came when Musk denied there is an active search to find a second-in-command to take on some of his day-to-day responsibilities, contrary to other reporting.

The day's drop in Tesla's stock shaved $5 billion off its market capitalization, but still left it about $1 billion above General Motors' GM.N $51 billion stock market value. The tweet said: "Am considering taking Tesla private at $420".

"I thought the worst of it was over", he told The New York Times. He also told the Times that Tesla board members had not complained to him about the go-private tweet.

The Tesla board also briefly sought out a strong No. 2 to Musk - but has given up on that endeavor, according to the Times report.

There are multiple reports that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the disclosure, including asking board members what they knew about Musk's plans.

Whether it is his dreams on sending reusable rockets in Space or plans for building new electric vehicles, Musk's endeavours attract a huge fan following, and reporters all over the globe are always on their toes ready to write about him and his companies.

The brash South African-born entrepreneur also sought to explain his tweet earlier this month about taking Tesla private, which has drawn scrutiny from regulators.

It's clear from the interview that Musk is overworked, and Whiston said the best course may be to bring in another executive to help with day-to-day operations.

'This has really come at the expense of seeing my kids.

Musk admitted in an interview with The New York Times that stress is taking a heavy toll on him. Last month he launched an extraordinary attack on one of the British divers involved in the rescue of 12 boys and their football coach who were trapped in a cave in Thailand, baselessly calling the diver a "pedo" on Twitter. "They can have the reins right now", he told the paper.

"If there was a way that I could not eat, so I could work more, I would not eat", Elon Musk once famously told a friend. "They can have the job", Musk was quoted as saying. He flew directly from the Gigafactory to his brother Kimbal's wedding in Catalonia, where was to be best man, arriving two hours before the ceremony, and returned immediately to Tesla headquarters afterward.

'Is there someone who can do the job better?
