Trump threatens auto tariffs against Canada if trade talks fail

US President Donald Trump demanded NAFTA be renegotiated after repeatedly criticizing the 24-year-old pact as a "terrible deal" and officials now are rushing to conclude the talks before Lopez Obrador takes office on December 1. But he threatened Canada with auto tariffs if the USA and Canada can't forge a deal.

Mexico's economy minister on Thursday said his team was working hard to strike a deal with the United States on new rules for the auto industry, which could pave the way for Canada to rejoin talks to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement. "New President of Mexico has been an absolute gentleman", Trump said on Twitter.

Trump says, "Canada must wait". Their Tariffs and Trade Barriers are far too high.

"Deal with Mexico is coming along nicely".

Adam Austen, a spokesman for 's foreign minister, added: "We're glad and the USA continue to work out their bilateral issues".

He said the Trudeau government's apparent preference for social media over person-to-person communications is a mistake. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres over the phone, diplomatic sources said, without sharing any further details.

Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray, who accompanied Guajardo, spoke to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday and "discussed the importance of concluding a NAFTA agreement", according to a statement from the State Department. "It's the only way we'll get to a deal", Austen said.

U.S. and Mexican officials will continue to work on bilateral issues before their Canadian counterparts rejoin the discussions on modernizing the 24-year-old trade deal, Guajardo said Friday.

But there is no specific date to return to trilateral discussions, he said.

Industry officials also said the US team had barely moved from its demands last May of a 75 percent overall regional content threshold with 40-45 percent content from high-wage zones - effectively the United States and Canada - with the only substantial change a slightly longer phase-in time.
