The 26-year-old also won when the event was last held in Montreal in 2016.

Simona Halep powered into the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal where she will play US Open victor Sloane Stephens or defending champion Elina Svitolina in the final.

With the win Stephens advances to her second consecutive Rogers Cup semifinal after falling to Caroline Wozniacki past year.

American Sloane Stephens faced little resistance in her 6-2 6-2 win over Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova in a match that took a little over an hour to complete.

Halep let off steam at the Women's Tennis Association after her quarterfinal Friday for giving her a hard schedule on a week in which she played twice on the one day due to a rain delay.

"I'm very happy to come through and get a little bit better during the match".

She then raced through the second set 6-1 with minimum fuss.

In a rematch of Halep's French Open final victory, she overcame Stephens in the match that saw 15 service breaks. I think she's a complex player. "I hope in the future it's going to be better".

Many players now would start to correct their mistakes made at the first set, but Garcia's game had started to unravel fast and at 1-all she had netted more shots, missed returns and hit strokes longer than need be.

French Open champion Halep remained on track to reclaim the tournament she last won two years ago with a convincing 6-4 6-1 success.

After a shaky start, Halep won three straight games to take the first set and dominated the second set behind pinpoint serving and stout defence.

Halep played four matches in three days after a night session was postponed because of rain. It's obviously upsetting that I didn't win, but I think I got better than the last final we played.

Barty, the world No. 16, has eclipsed her previous best at the tournament, a place in the last 16 when it was held in Toronto past year.
