State of emergency declared in preparation of Unite the Right anniversary

The National Park Service (NPS) has granted official permits to multiple counter-protests in Washington D.C.

Numerous most prominent white supremacist leaders from last year's rally have suffered setbacks in the past year, a result of forceful counter-protests, a series of lawsuits filed against different white supremacist leaders, movement feuds and infighting, and, in one case, prosecution for domestic violence.

Both Charlottesville, Va., and D.C. are bracing for potential violence in the vein of last August's "Unite the Right" rally, at which one person was killed and 19 were injured after a white nationalist plowed his auto into counterprotesters assembled after their Charlottesville rally.

Event: The rally will start in Lafayette Park in Washington, D.C., and run from August 11 to 12.

Northam's office informed that from Friday through Sunday, several events are planned in the Charlottesville area to mark the anniversary of the rally.

Last year's Unite the Right rally resulted in the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, as well as Virginia State Police troopers Lt. H. Jay Cullen, III and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates.

State Police keep a handful of Confederate protesters separated from counter demonstrators in front of the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Virginia State Police Superintendent Gary Settle said more than 700 state police will be activated during the weekend.

"Virginia continues to mourn the three Virginians who lost their lives in the course of the demonstrations a year ago", Northam said.

However, it has been reported that one of the films-Silver and Black-is no longer happening. Characters like Silk , Jackpot , and Nightwatch are also being considered for features.

The declaration that was issued on Wednesday will also allocate a whopping $2million to pay for response measures.

The formal rally was scheduled to start at noon Saturday but the first skirmishes of the day between protesters and counter-protesters were reported that morning.

The Unite the Right organizers sought to reconvene in Charlottesville but were denied a permit.

"We are not going there looking for anything negative to happen, but we plan to be prepared", said Eugene Puryear of ANSWER Coalition.

Some of the widely varied counterprotest groups are launching their efforts with interfaith events and speakers at Freedom Plaza, which is along Pennsylvania Avenue on the other side of the White House from the white nationalists' planned march route.

"I hope that the images and the noise that we are able to create with this will make people feel empowered", said Makia Green, Black Lives Matter DC core organizer.

Heyer was killed when James Alex Fields Jr. allegedly drove his vehicle into a crowd of protesters. "This year, I'm afraid of the police", Woolfork said.

LaFayette Square, located just north of the White House, is a public park that was part of the original plan for the capital city.
