Melania Trump's parents are now U.S. citizens

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, Melania Trump's Slovenian-born parents, took the oath of citizenship in NY on Thursday, their lawyer confirmed.

The First Lady wears an nearly "naked" dress while accompanying her husband to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. The first lady herself was granted citizenship in 2006.

Melania Trump became a US citizen in 2006 after marrying Trump the year before.

Viktor, 74, and Amalija, 73, had been living as permanent residents in the US.

The president in January proposed ending most family-based immigration and replacing it with a skills-based system.

The plan, which Trump reiterated last week at a Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania rally, would limit immigrants like his wife to sponsoring only their spouses and underage children to join them in the United States - not their parents, adult children or siblings.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs took their oaths in NY, the Associated Press reports.

Currently, the majority of green card recipients receive them via family sponsorship.

It's unclear whether Mr and Mrs Knavs had their green cards granted by a process the President Trump has sought to end. Green cards can also be obtained through employment, receiving asylum or refugee status, or in other special circumstances. Advocates for restricting legal immigration have pointed to the imbalance in favor of family connections as evidence of the need for reform, calling for a "merit-based" system that would choose immigrants based on need in the US.

Melania grew up in a two bedroom apartment in Sevnica, a small city formerly under communist control.

The first lady, born Melanija, changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modelling.

A source familiar with the situation told Yahoo News that the Knavses received their green cards before Trump was elected and that they were sponsored by their daughter.
