ACC Basketball Coach Reportedly Involved In Death Of New York Tourist

Wake Forest assistant basketball coach Jamill Jones has been charged with assaulting a tourist who later died in the hospital, according to a report from the New York Post.

Jones, 35, of Kernersville, North Carolina, turned himself in to police on Thursday, accompanied by a lawyer.

Wake Forest assistant coach Jamill Jones attacked digital marketing guru Sandor Szabo around 1:15 a.m. Sunday in Queens, causing him to fall and hit his head on the sidewalk, police said.

Szabo later died as a result of his injuries at a NY hospital.

Szabo was banging on multiple cars including Jones' prior to the incident, sources said.

The coach got out, followed Szabo to the sidewalk, clocked him and sped off, police said.

Wake Forest University said Thursday night that they had just learned of Jones' arrest and would release a statement at a later time. His family says he was visiting NY from Boca Raton, Florida, for a wedding. He was arraigned today on a misdemeanor assault charge and released on his own recognizance after entering his plea. His attorney calls the encounter a "tragic accident".

According to Jones's bio at Wake Forest's sports website, he is a Philadelphia native who attended Arkansas Tech and began his basketball coaching career in Washington, D.C., with an AAU squad named Team Takeover.

Jones coached at FGCU from 2013-2015.

Szabo, also 35, was "super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman", his company, at What If Media Group, said.

"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post continued.

His family said the marketing professional was leaving the hotel where his brother was staying and called for a vehicle to go back to his own hotel.

"We're going to say one thing and that's all".
