Chelsea, Real Madrid agree to Thibaut Courtois deal

Chelsea have agreed to sell Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to European champions Real Madrid, the Premier League club said on Wednesday.

Real Madrid have confirmed that Courtois will undergo a medical on Thursday morning, before signing a six-year deal and being presented at 1pm local time. Real Madrid also announced it will loan midfielder Mateo Kovacic to Chelsea in a separate, but simultaneously completed, deal.

After being strongly linked to Real Madrid, Arrizabalaga signed a new deal with Bilbao in January which raised his release fee to 80 million.

Seen as a panic purchase by some, Chelsea have addressed a position of need and have now paved the way for Golden Glove victor Thibaut Courtois to finally make his dream move to Real Madrid. Mario Stanić was the first, followed by goalkeeper Matej Delač, striker Stipe Perica, and offensive midfielder Marijo Pašalić, though they have all been sent out on loan from The Blues.

He helped the Blues win two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and one League Cup during his time at Stamford Bridge.

While not discussing the status of the transfer, Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri said that Kepa was "very young, but very, very good".

The figures involved in the goalkeeping merry-go-round don't make much sense from a Chelsea point of view and the Kepa deal isn't the only curious aspect of their summer business.

Kepa, who was part of Spain's World Cup squad and has won one cap for his country, has spent the past two seasons in Bilbao, making 53 LaLiga appearances.

The reported £71m fee would also eclipse the £65m fee paid by Liverpool to sign Brazil keeper Alisson Becker from Roma in July.

Kovacic had not played much with Madrid since joining the club in 2015 and had been seeking a transfer.
