Bali natural disaster latest pictures: Latest Lombok quake spreads across Indonesia

A strong aftershock has struck Indonesia's Lombok island, just four days after a devastating natural disaster killed more than 345 people and left thousands homeless.

The aftershock comes just four days after a devastating 6.9-magnitude quake struck Lombok, which relief agencies said had wiped out entire villages in the worst-hit regions in the north and west.

The strong aftershock, measured at magnitude 5.9 by the US Geological Survey, caused panic, damage to buildings, landslides and injuries.

Officials said the quake's epicentre was on land and so there was no risk of a tsunami.

Journalists reporting on the aftermath of the fatal natural disaster saw people running into the streets in panic.

Almost 1,500 people have been hospitalized with serious injuries and more than 156,000 have been displaced due to the extensive damage to thousands of homes.

He has said several times that the number of deaths will increase.

"Access is tough, because the quake [on Sunday] was so strong and paralyzed a lot of buildings", said Husni, a spokesman for the International Federation of the Red Cross who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Makeshift medical facilities have been set up to treat the injured.

Officials said the death toll had now risen to 319 and tens of thousands of people are homeless.

'Evacuees and people ran out of houses when they felt the strong shake of the 6.2 magnitude quake.

The Indonesian island of Lombok has been hit by a strong tremor, as the search continues for victims of Sunday's quake.

A 6.9 magnitude quake struck the island, a popular destination for foreign tourists, on Sunday evening, killing at least 131 local people and leaving about 150,000 homeless.

"I visited villages yesterday that were completely collapsed", he said, while other teams in East and North Lombok had reported villages where 75 percent of homes were damaged.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it's focusing its relief efforts on an estimated 20,000 people in remote areas in the island's north where aid still has not reached.

A field hospital has also been established near an evacuation centre catering to more than 500 people in the village of Tanjung.

"We lack the infrastructure to perform operations because (they) need to be performed in a sterile place", Wibowo told AFP.
