Oscars: Academy to add achievement in popular film category

The Oscars are introducing a new awards category for outstanding achievement in popular film. This creates ratings woes for the Academy, to be sure, but it's also generated an outcry from genre fans and critics, who argue that legitimately great artistic achievements in blockbuster and genre-heavy films are often overlooked, with a few exceptions like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and this year's big victor, The Shape of Water.

The Academy's board of governors met on Tuesday and reelected president John Bailey for a one year term. "Eligibility requirements and other key details will be forthcoming". Starting next year, the ceremony will now be shown in what the Academy describes as "a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast".

The 91st Annual Academy Awards, honoring the film achievements of 2018, will take place February 24, 2019.

"To honor all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined)", a letter to Academy members reads. "The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast".

While details of the popular film category are yet to be announced, it could be a way of superhero films finally breaking through to the Oscars with the acclaimed box office hit Black Panther possibly making an appearance. The date change will not affect awards eligibility dates or the voting process.

Khan has denied any wrongdoing and said the case was politically motivated. The PTI chief had been summoned by the NAB on July 18, 2018.

The 91st Oscars telecast remains as announced on Sunday, February 24, 2019. The Board of Governors took this charge seriously.

Now the Popular Film category arrives to give even more weight during each ceremony to the biggest films of the year, at a time when movies like Black Panther in 2018 and Wonder Woman in 2017 are getting increasingly big pushes from their studios in an effort to earn some Academy gold. Many wrote that they hoped the category will be about stunt work. "Every single one was either nominated or won Best Picture with the exception of 'Snow White, ' which was given an honorary Oscar".

Popular film? What is this?

Others blasted the academy with insults, calling the new changes "inane" and those who made them "cowards", while "Lord of the Rings" veteran Elijah Wood simply tweeted, "Best Popular Film? oof".
