Ontario Premier Doug Ford announces 'Buck-a-Beer' plan

"We're bringing back a buck-a-beer to Ontario". But, for some local brewers, the idea is falling flat. Barley Days Brewery, where Ford made his announcement, has said they will be releasing a specialty beer for $1. It's up to brewers to actually pass down the savings of $1 beer to consumers.

Today Premier Doug Ford is expected to reveal the provincial government's buck-a-beer plan. Ford campaigned on the idea of lowering beer prices with the catchy slogan.

"We're going to do this smartly and responsibly", said Ford in a statement issued Tuesday. "When you go out and you buy your case of beer for weekend, you're not going to be paying the same price; you're going to be paying less".

Brewers are not required to charge the lower rate and few in the province sell at the current minimum.

Beer fans across Ontario can officially start counting down the days until the return of "Buck-a-Beer", the popular $1-per-beer price floor that delighted people across Ontario until it was cancelled when the previous government abruptly introduced new beer price regulations.

And they sent that tweet, which, given the very strong case that people in the Saudi government helped make 9/11 happen , is pretty bonkers.

Paul Meek with Kitchesippi Beer Company isn't on board with the idea.

Meek says Kitchesippi contributes to the community through a variety of charitable events and supports a staff that is well-paid with good benefits, both of which would have to be cut if he were to cut the price of a bottle of beer to a dollar.

At the time, the Liberals defended their move by saying a price hike would result in people drinking less. "There are more important things to choose from".

The plan for buck-a-beer is being met with skepticism from some Toronto brewers who say they have other challenges to worry about. "The Premier is asking the beer producers to lower their price". Several social media posts have taken aim at Ford for focusing on alcohol sales while cutting funding increases for social assistance and education. However, Mr. Ford said he didn't think the lower prices would lead to more drinking and driving.
