Massive rogue planet found lurking outside our solar system

A new planet, which is 12 times bigger than Jupiter, has been discovered outside our solar system by astronomers. The "rogue", as it's referred to by researchers, is producing an unexplained glowing aurora and travels through space alone, without a parent star.

The planet is thought to be 200 million years old and is 20 light-years from Earth. A light year is equal to about 6 trillion miles.

"This object is right at the boundary between a planet and a brown dwarf, or 'failed star, ' and is giving us some surprises that can potentially help us understand magnetic processes on both stars and planets", lead author Melodie Kao of the California Institute of Technology Caltech and a Hubble Postdoctoral Fellow at Arizona State University said in a press release.

Brown dwarfs are generally "too massive to be considered planets, yet not massive enough to sustain nuclear fusion of hydrogen in their cores - the process that powers stars", the researchers note. It also has a magnetic field about 200 times as strong as our infamously spotted neighbor's, driving auroras much like our own, except with a lack of a sun, SIMP's auroras are likely caused by magnetic play with one of its own moons.

Fetus found on board American Airlines plane after flight from Charlotte
The discovery was made several hours after Flight 1942 touched down in NY from Charlotte, North Carolina. A cleaning crew working on an American Airlines jet found a fetus in a bathroom.

Originally detected in 2016 using the Very Large Array (VLA) telescope in New Mexico, the newly identified object was initially considered a brown dwarf. The first brown dwarf was discovered in 1995, although they were first theorized in the 1960s.

A rogue planet over 12 times bigger than Jupiter was discovered using a radio telescope. This meant that the object was a free-floating planet. They have detected a possible "rogue" planetary-mass object.

The huge planet has a surprisingly powerful magnetic field. One of those things is a strong aurora, often called "Northern Lights" here on Earth. At its size, it's right between the size of a planet and a failed star, so scientists will need to study it further to determine exactly what it is.

The VLA observations provided both the first radio detection and the first measurement of the magnetic field of a possible planetary mass object beyond our Solar System. Since the mass of a Brown dwarf is hard to accurately calculate, at the time, the object found was thought to be an old, massive brown dwarf. "We think these mechanisms can work not only in brown dwarfs, but also in both gas giant and terrestrial planets", Kao said.
