Dallas resident is county's first West Nile death of 2018

The Iowa Department of Public Health says West Nile is spread by mosquitoes and can produce symptoms ranging from fever and mild headache to life-threatening inflammation of the brain.

Dusk and dawn are when mosquitoes are most active. Standing water can be treated with EPA-approved larvicides to kill mosquitoes before they become adults.

The health district said mosquito testing, which began in June is expected to continue through the late fall.

DCHHS said there is now no vaccine or specific treatment for West Nile virus.

According to an announcement from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's office, the rates of mosquitoes carrying West Nile have been much higher this year.

The most up-to-date information from Public Health Ontario shows there have been three reported human cases of West Nile virus, two in Toronto and one that is travel-related. However, the majority of people infected with the virus do not get sick.
