Colorado Resident Hospitalized With Potentially Deadly Form Of West Nile Virus

The resident started to feel ill on July 27 and was hospitalized the next day, the release said.

It's not uncommon to find West Nile virus in mosquitoes found in Peel Region. According to World Health Organisation, there is one reported case of transplacental (mother-to-child) WNV transmission. The increase in mosquitoes they've identified as being infected with West Nile has come earlier this year than in past years.

Authorities say Iowa's first reported 2018 death associated with the West Nile virus has occurred.

The province said the risk is expected to remain high in the coming weeks.

"It's peak season for mosquito activity, and it's important that we all be vigilant and take precautions when enjoying the outdoors this time of year", said CU Boulder Assistant Director for Environmental Operations Rob Lenahan. It's infected more than 150 people in the state over the past six years.

Symptoms include fever, headache and body aches. Less than one percent of those infected develop serious illness of the nervous system like encephalitis or meningitis. No vaccine has been discovered yet for the infection.

Common places water can accumulate are outdoor features like potted plants and birdbaths, storage bins, kids' toys and pools, rain gutters, and corrugated downspouts.

To combat West Nile, the Health Department recommends using insect repellant with 10-35% DEET, wearing light-colored clothing and staying indoors at dusk.

DRESS in long sleeves and trousers in areas where mosquitoes are active.

"It doesn't take much for several hundred mosquitoes to be born".
