Boeing crew-capsule mission delayed after abort engines fail in test

Later in April, NASA trained Boeing and SpaceX teams to operate the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected armored vehicle created to help personnel escape the launch pad in the unlikely event of an emergency on launch day. But for what it's worth, SpaceX still has to receive NASA's human-rated safety certification for the Block 5 version of its Falcon 9 rocket, including propellant tanks that were redesigned in the wake of the 2016 explosion.

SpaceX carried out a pad abort test of its Crew Dragon vehicle in May 2015.

During the manned tests, the astronauts will be able to use the displays inside the spacecraft, communicate with mission control and practise manual controls during flight.

On Friday, NASA is expected to announce which of four astronauts will ride on test flights and maiden voyages of the Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon, which arrived at Cape Canaveral last month.

Each test flight will provide data on the performance of the rockets, spacecraft, ground systems, and operations to ensure the systems are safe to fly astronauts.

If this second test is successful, Boeing will launch Spacecraft 2 along with its first passengers toward the middle of 2019. Boeing's is the CST-100 Starliner launched on United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rockets.

More than 50 people are in NASA's astronaut corps, though 12 in the agency's 2017 astronaut class are still training. That schedule calls for an uncrewed test flight in late 2018 or early 2019, followed by a crewed test flight in mid-2019. The first flight of SpaceX's Crew Dragon is expected in April 2019, following an unmanned test in November, NASA said.

The commercial crew program grew out of a NASA-funded competition that began in 2011, the year the space shuttle completed its final flight.

NASA today laid out a newly stretched-out schedule for flying astronauts to the International Space Station from USA soil, with SpaceX's first such flight set for no earlier than next April. In 2006, it initiated public-private partnerships (PPPs) to build "commercial cargo" systems.

"To meet NASA's requirements, the commercial providers must demonstrate that their systems are ready to begin regular flights to the space station", NASA said in its blog posting. The report cited safety concerns and testing delays, and warned that future delays could interrupt the access of American astronauts to the International Space Station.

The hardware for these uncrewed missions is being prepared for launch. Johnson Space Center Director Mark Geyer and Kennedy Space Center Director Bob Cabana will join Bridenstine and representatives from Boeing and SpaceX to introduce the crews, according to the news release.

SpaceX has not publicly revised its Crew Dragon schedule.

NASA is about to name the first astronauts ever to fly commercial spaceships. "Two of those demonstrations are uncrewed flight tests, known as Orbital Flight Test for Boeing, and Demo-1 for SpaceX". If history is any guide, the crews taking the spotlight on Friday will have even more time to train.
