They are also likely to warn that people's behaviour is being "modified and changed" by the content on social media sites, and their views are being manipulated to sometimes spread "messages of hate". In flawless Carrollian fashion, it all started with a question of semantics: "what does "fake news" mean?"

"Despite nobody ever producing any evidence for Carole (Cadwalladr - British investigative journalist)'s original loony conspiracy theory that I was secretly coordinating with Arron Banks, Bannon and Robert Mercer, the Committee also asks for yet another inquiry of this and of course they want the police involved to give credibility to their fantasies and legitimise their campaign for a second referendum".

MP Damian Collins told the BBC that the general public now struggles to identify "fake news".

Inevitably, the worse alternative turned out to be the case.

Facebook's problems began to increase when U.S. intelligence agencies concluded that Russians had used fake identities to spread propaganda over Facebook and other social media sites to try to influence the 2016 USA presidential election.

The report also summarises the evidence collected during the committee's inquiry into fake news, disinformation, and election interference.

"It is... fake news". Lies, propaganda and Russian dezinformatsiya are nothing new; to be new is the way social media allows for mendacious or partisan content to be published unchallenged, and to be tailored to whet specific audiences' doubts, fears, and biases.

The report's most relevant conclusions stem from that question. "If it curates that space, Facebook has a responsibility".

Some observers have pointed out that advertisers both in and out of politics have always attempted to target viewers with information they think they will be most responsive to, and that in the pre-digital age nearly everyone received the lion's share of their news from newspapers which are very clearly biased - reinforced, then as now, by the views expressed by "the people closest to you". It worked closely with whistle-blowers and journalists to help bring to light the fact that Vote Leave, the official leave campaign during the 2016 European Union referendum, exceeded its spending limit.

The committee recommended taxes be imposed on social media companies to finance "a comprehensive media educational framework" and said all political advertising work should be "listed for public display".

Pan-India draft call
Thousands of federal security forces have reportedly been deployed to Assam to prevent anticipated unrest over the draft list. Earlier, the Bangladesh government had accepted the identity of these immigrants as Bangladeshi nationals .

"It is disappointing", Collins said, "That a company with the resources of Facebook chooses not to provide a sufficient level of detail and transparency on various points".

The committee said electoral law must be "updated to reflect changes in campaigning techniques".

Companies such as Facebook and YouTube have repeatedly said they are just a "platform", rather than a "publisher".

Four federal agencies in the USA have launched inquiries into Facebook's role in the Cambridge Analytica scandal, including whether it misled investigators.

The committee also recommended setting the maximum fine for election-law violations as a percentage of an internet company's revenue - which would cause much more pain for the likes of Facebook or Google than the current 20,000 pound fine.

"It must ensure that future campaigns and elections can not be abused or manipulated". The import of some of the revelations made during the committee's over sixty sessions goes well beyond the brief of a parliamentary committee: it includes foreign interference, corporate arrogance, and the actions of the people gravitating around the cloudy Cambridge Analytica-SCL-AIQ blob, a moneyed clique who have already launched a new company, Emerdata, helmed by Blackwater founder Erik Prince.

"We are facing nothing less than a crisis in our democracy", Collins said in a statement.

'It provided witnesses who have been unwilling or unable to give full answers to the committee's questions'.

Right now, though, there is no evidence that the government is taking any step to entrust the investigation to better equipped authorities.

MPs from across the House of Commons heard from dozens of academics, executives, political operatives and experts between October 2017 and July 2018 before producing this interim report on their findings. The unpreparedness that plunged Britain down the fake news rabbit hole is still to be addressed.
