We Will Partner With Google To Boost Internet Connectivity - Osinbajo

The hotspots will be launched in partnership with 21st Century, a fiber provider in Nigeria. Since then, Google has launched similar initiatives in countries like Indonesia, Thailand, and Mexico, with Nigeria emerging as the first African country to enjoy this free internet service in Africa.

Giving his keynote address at the event on Thursday, the Vice President said that the Federal Government will work with the tech giant and other technology companies in the country to ensure that Nigerians have improved access to the Internet.

Google launched a network of free Wi-Fi hotspots in Nigeria, part of its efforts to increase its presence in Africa's most populous nation.

"Google Maps Go will provide users with turn-by-turn directions, whether they are travelling by auto, bus or walking on foot, " she said.

This includes the job search feature launched in March in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, and a search experience in collaboration with experts at the University of Ibadan that allows users explore health conditions based on symptoms.

Listing some of its other achievements, the company said it has trained over 2.5 million of the 10 million Africans it had promised to train by 2022, under its Digital Skills Programme. "And together with our partners Udacity and Andela, we've provided 15,000 two-month "single course" scholarships and 500 six-month nanodegree scholarships to aspiring and professional developers across Africa", Google said.

Google top officials who were present at the event unveiled a collection of new applications that will be made available in the coming days for smartphone users.

This is all part of Google's aim of helping more people to get access to computing, and of ongoing commitment to building platforms and products that are useful for billions and that help people to make the most of the internet. We need to connect young people to technology, we have to use the Internet.

However, Anjali Joshi, the Vice President, Product Management at Google said that, the initiative would soon take place in other African Countries.
