Vt., NH mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus

Additionally, two mosquito samples recently submitted to the Department of State Health Services tested positive for West Nile.

There were 14 human cases confirmed locally past year and in 2015, there were two deaths related to a West Nile infection.

"The very most important thing is preventing mosquito breeding", said Dr. Amanda Robinson-Chadwell, director of the Bell County Public Health district.

Soucy said, "This is nothing to panic about".

Temperature and humidity are conspiring to make it an above average year for most counties in South Dakota. We've already seen it in the neighbouring states.

"West Nile virus activity in mosquitoes is the highest OH has seen this early in the season since 2012 when we reported 122 human cases for the year", said Sietske de Fijter, state epidemiologist and chief of the ODH Bureau of Infectious Diseases, in a statement.

More severe symptoms include encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord). The sickness can become quite serious in some people, and those age 50 or older are at the highest risk. Infection can lead to death in 3 - 15% of persons with severe forms of the illness.

A second trial with the same drug in Canada has also been paused, though there is no indication anyone there has been harmed. We contacted the one Canadian woman who was now in the trial, directing her to stop taking the drug or placebo.

Karen Sutkus, who is an environmental health specialist, collects the sample in a week and then send it to the laboratory of the state. "When the weather is hot and humid it presents ideal breeding factors for mosquitoes".

They said the peak years were 2003, with 73 cases, and 2012, with 47.

Residents are encouraged not to keep areas of stagnant water on their property, to wear insect repellent with DEET, and to avoid exposing skin when at outside at dusk by wearing socks, shoes, long sleeves and long trousers. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes.

Sexton said mosquitos take seven days to transform from eggs to adults.

A woman from the Will County portion of Aurora was diagnosed with West Nile virus after being treated at Rush Copley Medical Center, county health department officials said in a news release.

You can always protect yourself by limiting outdoor activity at dawn and dusk and wearing bug spray with Deet.
