Facebook sets up subsidiary in China, where it's blocked

Facebook has a sales office in Hong Kong, and for years has sought to open an office in mainland China. It has enrolled capital of $30 million.

However, the office's registration has since been removed from the Chinese government website, suggesting possible complications, the New York Times says. If the subsidiary is allowed to proceed, it will be a toe in the water here for the Silicon Valley company. A Chinese government notice listing a Facebook subsidiary in the country was taken down late Tuesday from the website where it was posted.

Facebook is as of now hindered in China. Local equivalents, like Tencent Holdings Ltd.'s WeChat, dominate the country's Internet landscape, and in many ways the mobile app revolution has moved faster in China than elsewhere.

"We are interested in setting up an innovation hub in Zhejiang to support Chinese developers, innovators and start-ups", a Facebook representative said via email, referring to the Chinese province where Hangzhou is located.

"Facebook opening a research center in Hangzhou wasn't going to fast-track the entry of its main product to Chinese markets", Sheehan said.

To get around those fears, some USA companies, like LinkedIn, have voluntarily censored their products.

Explosion reported outside the US Embassy in Beijing; suspect injured
An area outside the embassy in the Chinese capital's Chaoyang district was cordoned off by authorities. After the initial reports, news of the incident was very quickly censored on Chinese social media .

"Having a wholly foreign-owned enterprise does not change our approach in China", a Facebook spokesperson said on Tuesday after announcing the venture. "Right now, there isn't an intersection".

The world's largest social network has lost its ability top operate an innovation hub in China just a day after it was allowed to do so.

Google has several hundred staff in China and recently launched its own artificial intelligence (AI) lab.

Mark Zuckerberg is the Facebook founder who has already made several attempts to charm Chinese officials even learning Mandarin.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said Facebook had opened an office in China after obtaining a permit. The company sells ads across the world to Chinese companies and the Chinese government.

Facebook can't catch a break in China.
