Dutch Viagra trial ends after baby deaths

The hope of the study was that the drug would encourage a better flow of blood through the placenta, promoting the growth of the child.

Researchers said their principle goal now is to find out what happened.

The Dutch study began in 2015 and involved 183 women.

11 of these babies were later identified to have elevated blood pressure in their lungs, presumed to be linked to the drug trial.

Intrauterine growth restriction occurs when some problem or abnormality prevents a fetus's cells from growing or makes cells decrease in size, according to Stanford Children's Health. In the control group, three babies had the lung disease, but none of them died.

"Fetal growth restriction" is caused by a lack of blood flow from the placenta to the unborn child, resulting in undernourishment and stunted growth and development. A further eight babies in the trial died of unrelated conditions. But they also found no benefit.

According to Ganzevoor, the drug seems to increase the risk of the child contracting the lung disease, as well as the risk of death after birth.

A team led by Kenneth Lim at the University of British Columbia is part of an global research effort looking at the effectiveness of sildenafil, the generic name of Viagra, in treating women with a condition called early-onset intrauterine growth restriction. Six babies were born with the lung disorder and survived.

In the second test group, where the mothers were given placebos, nine babies died shortly after birth.

Oil prices spike after Saudi halts shipments following attack
The Kingdom also transports oil via a pipeline to the Saudi city of Yanbu on the Red Sea, which supplies Europe and North America. Saudi Arabia has halted oil shipments through the Red Sea after an attack from Yemen rebels on two giant crude tankers.

About 15 women who took the medication have not yet given birth. Women participated in a medical experiment. Since the drug is no longer under patent, scientists have been keen to explore other uses for the drug. A trial in Ireland has yet to start enrollment; researchers in that study did not respond to emails today, but Mol expects it will be canceled.

The center's researchers will analyze the now available data.

Earlier trials in the United Kingdom and Australia and New Zealand did not find any evidence of potential harm from the intervention.

"It needs a thorough investigation because the complications were not seen in the two other, similar trials that have already been done in the United Kingdom and Australia and New Zealand".

A second trial with the same drug in Canada has also been paused, though there is no indication anyone there has been harmed. We contacted the one Canadian woman who was now in the trial, directing her to stop taking the drug or placebo. We will contact the 20 other Canadian women who have already participated in the trial. One possible explanation is a "rebound effect", Groom says.

Sildenafil, a generic version of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, was given to 93 pregnant women; another 90 were given an inert placebo.

Patients had even heard about the study and had asked him to prescribe it, he said.

The Queensland trial is significantly different to the Dutch one, where Sildenafil is used in to promote growth in severely underdeveloped unborn babies.
