Toronto Raptors to promote assistant Nick Nurse to head coach

In the NBA's G-League, Nurse won two championships with two different teams and also took home coach of the year honours in 2010-11 with the Iowa Energy.

The Toronto Raptors are hiring assistant Nick Nurse to become the franchise's new head coach, league sources told ESPN. Casey was sacked after the Raptors were swept out of the second round of this year's playoffs by Cleveland. Adrian Wojnarowski reported shortly after that the Raptors are hiring Nurse, so consider it done.

Nurse, 50, replaces Dwane Casey who was sacked last month after the Raptors were swept in the conference semifinals by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The move seems to suggest there will be at least some continuity between what the Raptors have been doing and what they'll do on his watch.

One month into their coaching search, Masai Ujiri and the Toronto Raptors may have neared a decision on who will be the team's next head coach. He joined the Raptors organization in 2013 and has served as an assistant on the staff alongside Dwane Casey since then.

How will Nick Nurse help the Raptors in 2018-19? That's the biggest thing.

Casey, meanwhile, has already found his next job: with the Detroit Pistons.

The Iowa native also spent years coaching professional teams in England and was an assistant on Great Britain's 2012 Olympic team.
