The Editor of Rising Kashmir Shujaat Bukhari has been shot outside his office in the press colony in Lal Chauk.

According to some media reports, Bukhari was in his vehicle when "terrorists attacked" him leaving him and his PSO injured.

Shujaat Bukhari was given police protection since an attack on him in 2000.

Bukhari was a veteran journalist who was the Editor-in-Chief of the Rising Kashmir, a daily newspaper in the state. Terrorism has hit a new low with Shujaat's killing. "Mr Bukhari was a voice of moderation and a courageous, big-hearted editor who mentored a large cadre of young journalists from Kashmir", the statement said.

Prominent Pakistani journalist Najam Sethi tweeted that Bukhari was a "voice of truth and reason and decency".

He was well-known in Kashmir and was previously a correspondent for the Indian newspaper The Hindu.

"Press Club of India is shocked and saddened by this mindless terror attack that claimed the life of Shujaat Bukhari in the holy month of Ramzan".

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval indicated that the offer was only till Eid.
