Trump says one-on-one meeting with Kim will show if 'real deal' possible

On Monday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump had a meeting with Lee, followed by a working luncheon hosted by the Singaporean leader.

The U.S. dollar index traded mixed against other major currencies in late trading on Monday, as investors awaited the hotly anticipated meeting between top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump in Singapore.

"North Korea must now take concrete and verifiable steps to implement its commitments".

Kim was also en route for the meeting to discuss the fate of his country's nuclear weapons arsenal.

The US side seeks denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula under terms that give US and global authorities broad power to inspect nuclear reactors in North Korea at any time they choose to verify parts of a potential denuclearization agreement.

"President Trump has demonstrated his strong will to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and establish peace on the Korean Peninsula through his practical actions".

Along with the denuclearisation pledge, Washington also committed to provide security guarantees for its old enemy.

Previous summits, North Korean TV has not said anything about them to North Koreans until after the summit was over.

Kim summit: North Korea hails 'new era' of relations with the US
Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday for the summit, with Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal at the top of the agenda. But it's Kim's pursuit of nuclear weapons that gives his meeting with Trump such high stakes.

A high-stakes meeting with Kim could do wonders for Trump's self-promoted image as a deal-maker and a statesman.

Trump needs to walk away from the meeting "with some sort of document", says Joel Wit, a former State Department official who's negotiated with Kim's representatives - and it must include the word "denuclearization".

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.

Trump's goal is "ridding the United States and the world of threats posed by North Korea's weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programmes", secretary of state Mike Pompeo told reporters on June 7, according to Bloomberg.

After, a bilateral meeting will take place. "We're the only ones who make up our mind on this". "We're pleased to see it, but we've seen discussions before, in previous decades". The first one is that he's scared or at least uncertain.

Wit (@Joel_Wit38), a senior fellow at the Stimson Center and founder of 38 North, joins Here & Now's Robin Young to weigh in on how Trump should approach the negotiations and what North Korea might want out of them.

Government frontbencher James McGrath put it in a historic context: "As Churchill said, it is better to jaw jaw than war war".

After greeting each other, the two leaders planned to sit for a one-on-one meeting that a U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said could last up to two hours, with only translators joining them.
