Real Madrid appoints Julen Lopetegui as coach for next three seasons

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) removed Lopetegui on Wednesday, two days before their opening Group B game against Portugal, and appointed director of football Fernando Hierro to take charge instead.

On the eve of the tournament, Spain have chose to sack manager Julen Lopetegui - news which was confirmed via a press conference from their training base in Krasnodar on Wednesday.

"We have been forced to dispense with the national coach".

"It was a decision I had to take quickly - it was a case of taking it or walking away, but I couldn't say no". I'm sure this will, over time, make us stronger.

A press conference was called for Wednesday morning at 9:30 BST (4:30 ET) and then put back by an hour as speculation mounted that Spain could remove Lopetegui from his duties ahead of the tournament.

He has been in charge of "La Roja" since 2016, and has guided them to the World Cup after coming out top in a hard group that also featured Italy.

"There's a lot to do".

Imperious Nadal Downs Thiem To Claim 11th Roland Garros Title
In full control of the French Open final, a rather familiar position for him, Rafael Nadal suddenly was anxious . But once he squandered that chance against Thiem, the Italian ended up falling to a 7-5 7-6 (10) 6-1 defeat.

The surprise news of Lopetegui's appointment as Zinedine Zidane's successor at Real Madrid took the Spanish FA by surprise on Tuesday, as they were unaware that their head coach was staging talks with Bernabeu chiefs. The Spanish team is the team of all of Spain.

Lopetegui had led the national side on a 20-game unbeaten run since he took over after the 2016 European Championships, and they had every chance of winning the World Cup in Russian Federation.

"Many of the staff are still with us and we've watched videos about the upcoming match, so we have to be intelligent and coherent".

Perez owes his fame as a household name outside Spain to the prowess on the soccer field of Real Madrid, a club that has won the Champion's League a record 13 times, including this season.

"I think Rubiales acted correctly and was looking out for the federation, which should be above any single individual", Hernandez told sports daily Marca.

"I don't feel betrayed".

Lopetegui was sacked Wednesday, two days before Spain's opening match against Portugal, because he accepted a job Tuesday to coach Real Madrid next season. "I know the circumstances and Julen's work has been fantastic and I wish him all the best", he said. We'll have to see.
