"I was praying to God he wouldn't make a left turn to enter that lane of traffic", Mannino said. The 2-year-old boy is running south on Route 59 along the right lane, steps away from passing motorists in the center lane.

A heroic police officer rescued a child wandering in the middle of a highway in IL.

"I did what any of my peers would have done", Mannino said, "position that auto, get out and quickly corral that kid before something bad would have happened".

Mannino alerted dispatch that he caught the boy and would begin the search for his parents, according to the Naperville Sun.

Sergeant Mannino with the Naperville police department saw the boy and sprung into action. Sergeant Mannino received a lifesaver award from his department.

Mannino says the mother showed up moments later and "obviously was very emotional". She told the officer he had made it about two blocks from their home.

No charges were filed against the mother, and police ruled the incident was an accident.
