No ifs, no butts: Verstappen ahead of the pack in Canada practice

Ricciardo trails new championship leader Vettel by 37 points, having been 38 from the summit before the race when Hamilton was still on top.

SIXTH place on the grid at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve brings back memories for Daniel Ricciardo - he claimed his maiden F1 victory from there in 2014.

The Australian lapped the unforgiving steel-lined streets of the Mediterranean principality in one minute and 11.841 seconds to outpace the Dutchman by almost two-tenths of a second with the first lap under 1:12 at the track.

Then came three-time defending Montreal victor Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, and Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas.

It was the best time in Friday afternoon's (Saturday NZ time) practice and a full second better than his best lap in the morning, when he was also the fastest.

"(We're) not yet there", said Vettel.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen posted the fastest lap at the Formula One Canadian Grand Prix for the third practice session in a row.

He has raced in the F2 series the last two seasons and now sits 10th in F2 standings after eight races this year, including a third-place finish at Baku, Azerbaijan.

Red Bull elected to run on the hypersoft compound in Q2, a strategic decision destined to provide its drivers with an edge at the outset on Sunday and keep them out of sequence thereafter against their direct rivals who will all be starting on the harder ultrasoft rubber.

While an issue during the second session was initially thought to be MGU-K related, many still fearing that the Australian is on the verge of a grid penalty following the Monaco failure, it turned out to be an electrical issue related to the Renault engine update. Sainz finished behind Stoffel Vandoorne in the standings; the Belgian was the other casualty of the session, breaking his rear suspension after hitting the wall through on the exit of Turn 8.

"It was a little bit frustrating, but it doesn't seem too dramatic" of a problem, Ricciardo said. The tyres were holding on really well at the end when I was challenging Valtteri because he was fuel saving which shows our auto was working well and for sure we have a very competitive vehicle at the moment. In the end, without replacing the motor, but the time ricciardo lost. "It was waiting, waiting, waiting and eventually we got out".

"We knew we would probably have a couple of cars to pass and it gives us a chance off the start and on the first lap with a bit more grip, afterwards we will have to manage them". Sauber's Marcus Ericsson also had a spin that left him facing the wrong way on the track, but he straightened out and resumed. He is hoping to build on last year's appearance at his hometown track, when as a rookie he earned the first points of his Formula One career.
