Monaco to sell Lemar to Atletico Madrid

Multiple people within Antoine Griezmann's inner circle say they want him to stay at Atletico Madrid rather than join Barcelona next season, sources close to the forward told ESPN FC's Julien Laurens.

The France global - who has spent three seasons with Monaco since arriving from Caen - is in Russian Federation for the World Cup.

Antoine Griezmann has disappointed both Atletico Madrid and Barcelona fans by refusing to publicly announce if he has decided which club he will be playing for next season.

Griezmann has called on Atletico to invest more in their squad, and Lemar's arrival is a sign the La Liga runners-up are taking their star's advice.

Arsene Wenger was reportedly targeting Lemar to be the replacement for Alexis Sanchez last summer transfer window deadline day as the Gunners were working on shipping Sanchez out to Manchester City.

Monaco echoed Atleti's statement on their official Twitter feed, saying: "AS Monaco and @Atleti announce that they have found an agreement in principle for the transfer of Thomas Lemar".

The 27-year-old France striker called a press conference, but surprisingly refused to confirm whether he will move or stay in the Spanish capital. "The decision is complicated, I am calm", he said.

"It's good that you're taking an interest", Griezmann said after France's 1-1 friendly draw with the United States.

One of the standout performers for Monaco during their title-winning season and UEFA Champions League semi-final run in the 2016/17 campaign, the technically gifted midfielder will now negotiate personal terms before completing a transfer to the LaLiga outfit.
