Donald Trump’s trade adviser apologises for insulting Justin Trudeau

He said in a press conference that it was his mistake that he used such a language as he wanted to send an important message to the G7 members.

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada".

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Tuesday apologized for making inappropriate comments attacking Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Let me correct a mistake I made", Navarro said at a Wall Street Journal conference, according to video provided by the Journal's CFO Network.

Trump said Trudeau "probably doesn't know that Air Force One has about 20 televisions and I see the television and he's giving a news conference about how he will not be pushed around by the United States and I say 'push him around?"

A number of other Trump officials and the president himself also lashed out at the Canadian prime minister following the Gang of Seven summit in Canada last weekend.

Freeland said she had a "good conversation" Sunday with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, and that the pair would try to meet in Washington this week. "Having said that we are aware that investigation on autos under Section 232 has been initiated".

Among the many topics the president addressed with reporters afterward was his recent Twitter campaign against Trudeau, whom he has called "dishonest" and "weak". The country has rallied together, with public opinion polling showing there's wide support for Canada's retaliatory tariffs against the steel and aluminum duties that will kick in for some US goods on July 1.

Trudeau, Trump told ABC News, "shouldn't have done that".

Trump trade adviser: Harsh comments against Trudeau were a ‘mistake’
He didn't specify what he considered false about Trudeau's statements. "I have a good relationship with Justin Trudeau ", he said. And every Canadian PM knows USA presidents have enormous power to affect Canadians' lives, even accidentally.

Mr. Trump, for his part, continued to threaten Mr. Trudeau Tuesday at a news conference in Singapore after meeting with Mr. Kim.

Trump, meanwhile, renewed his criticisms of Canada's protection of its dairy sector, saying: "It's very unfair to our farmers, and it's very unfair to the people of our country".

The United States imposed new tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum less than two weeks ago on a "national security" basis.

The president said he had a "good relationship with Justin. "(Trudeau) learned. You can't do that.

"From the beginning we have said that our approach would be to work for the best possible outcome but to always be prepared for the worst, to have backup plans", she said.

Canada is preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on American steel and aluminum at the end of the month.

If the US imposes a 25 per cent tariff on those exports, suddenly they don't make much economic sense, said Kristin Dziczek, vice president of industry, labour and economics at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"I think we've simply got to continue and expand that effort that's been developed", Former Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Tuesday.

"We've got to look at what supports are available to ensure that if their jobs, their livelihoods are compromised, what can the government do to support these folks".
