ARCTIC BLAST: Trump SLAMS Canada’s Trudeau Over G7 Comments

U.S. President Donald Trump answers questions about the summit with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un during a press conference at the Capella resort on Sentosa Island Tuesday, June 12, 2018 in Singapore.

After Mr. Trudeau's press conference, Mr. Trump said the steel tariffs were applied to Canada because of Canadian tariffs on US dairy imports.

"As an American, I hate this", Heyman said in the interview.

Trump escalated a trade war earlier this month when he announced he would impose tariffs on steel, aluminum and other metals from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Canada's prime minister earned Trump's ire by giving a press conference, after the United States president left La Malbaie, in which he spoke critically of USA trade policy and said Canada would "move forward with retaliatory measures" in response to Trump's move to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel. "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did", said Navarro, referring to the joint press conference that is routinely held at the end of the annual events.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has apologised for his sharp comments directed at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after last week's G7 summit.

A Trudeau spokesman, Cameron Ahmad, said on Saturday night that Mr Trudeau "said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public and in private conversations" with Mr Trump.

On Sunday morning Navarro and Trump's director of the National Economic Council, Larry Kudlow, piled on the criticisms.

"Canada does not believe that ad hominem attacks are a particularly appropriate or useful way to conduct our relations with other countries", Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland responded.

As for Trump's own response, he predicted that Trudeau's remarks are going to cost Canada "a lot of money".

Trump's tough rhetoric for the leader of Canada, one of the United States' closest allies, was in sharp contrast with the words he chose to describe Kim.

MacLauchlan also took the opportunity to affirm his support for the supply management system in Canada's dairy industry, which has been heavily attacked by members of the Trump administration.

Trump has consistently railed against what he claims are unfair trade practices by some of America's biggest trade partners, including Canada.

Canada is the U.S.'s largest trading partner, and the US economy would struggle to make up for Canada's absence, Heyman noted. The U.S. had a trade surplus with Canada of $8.4 billion previous year, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

Asked if he was apologizing, Navarro said "yeah, absolutely".

"I actually like Justin, you know, I think he's good, I like him, but he shouldn't have done that", Trump said.
