American Cancer Society lowers age recommendation for colon cancer screenings

And there's one to two thousand different species, and it turns out that certain of those species are linked to a higher risk of colon cancer.

"These tests work and they're safe", he says. A CT scanner uses high-tech, low-dose X-rays to generate 3-D, moving images of the colon that doctors examine for polyps and signs of cancer.

"In people born more recently, they're at four times the risk for rectal cancer than people born in the '50s (at the same age), for example, and double the risk of colon cancer", he said.

- A new report from the American Cancer Society is recommending adults should be screened for colon cancer at age 45 instead of 50 after a study found cancer has increased more than 50 percent among younger adults since 1994.

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer related deaths.

Colorectal cancer deaths are declining, but shocking disparities remain.

"Virtual colonoscopy does not require sedation", Judy Yee, MD, chair of the ACR Colon Cancer Committee, said in the statement. "Nobody knows why really clearly, and that's a big area of interest, but nobody's questioning that it's happening".

It's worth noting that overall case numbers still aren't high for people aged 20 to 49 - rates in that group rose to 5.2 cases per 100,000 people from 2.6 per 100,000. But the change is disconcerting.

A colonoscopy is not the only effective screening tool.

O'Neil said it is still not clear why more younger people are being diagnosed.

Her gynecologist routinely suggested early colorectal screening for patients, and Lari's testing lead to a shocking diagnosis of advanced colon cancer at age 47. But there may be other not-yet-known explanations as well.

She applauded the move toward earlier screening, saying it "will benefit the general public". "Whichever way we can get a patient to get tested for this cancer is the right one to do", said Dr. Anthony.

The American Cancer Society announced new guidelines this week when it comes to colorectal cancer screenings.

But about a third of people over 50 never get screened.

There are other screening options but colonoscopy remains the best screening options for the cancer.

Another option is a multi-target stool DNA test, which is done every three years and also involves collecting a sample at home and sending it in.

The ACS recommends a colonoscopy be done every 10 years. Prior recommendations to catch slow-moving malignancies advised the start of regular checks at age 50, but a paper published by the ACS Wednesday said Americans should jump on it sooner. That wording means there's good evidence that doing so will help reduce mortality rates. But based on the ways colon and rectal cancers have started to affect younger people, the ACS determined that such a change is still important to recommend.

The same tests are recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a panel that reviews evidence and issues advice for a variety of screenings and treatments.

Researchers believe the rise in colon cancer incidents are due to the obesity epidemic in our country, environmental factors and eating large amounts of processed foods like canned meat.
