Heavier Women May Face Higher Cancer Risks, Study Finds

A Business Insider report about the WCRF advice noted processed meat and booze, even in small amounts, can lead to many different types of cancer.

Chair of Cancer Council Australia's Nutrition and Physical Activity Committee, Steve Pratt, says he supports the WCRF's recent statement.

Being overweight is likely to overweight smoking as the biggest risk factor for cancer within decades, according to the report.

New guidance states that we should eat "little, if any, processed meat", and that we should limit alcohol consumption.

Exploring the effect of a lifestyle intervention on cancer risk: 43-year follow-up of the randomized Oslo diet and antismoking study[published online May 22, 2018].

Their analysis linked obesity or being overweight to 12 cancers, including those affecting the liver, ovary, prostate, stomach, mouth and throat, join bowel, breast, gallbladder, kidney, oesophagus, pancreas and womb.

Even small amounts of processed meats and booze increase the risk of a number of cancers outlined in World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) guidelines, which are updated once a decade. Numerous remaining points in the plan highlight the need to ensure you are not obese, thus preventing some cancers. In a Norwegian study that tracked 137,205 women between 30 and 70 years old, researchers also found that those who gained more than 22 pounds over a period of five to eight years were almost twice as likely as those who maintained a stable weight to develop pancreatic cancer.

He acknowledged that such airport-style screening would carry a high cost for the thousands of school districts in the state. He is being held without bond, on suicide watch, at the Galveston County Jail in Galveston, Sheriff Henry Trochesset said.

There is now strong evidence excessive weight is the cause of at least 12 cancers, five more than when the last WCRF recommendations were published in 2007, the authors said.

The recommendations included: being a healthy weight; exercising; eating grains, veg, fruit and beans; avoiding high calorie foods; limiting the consumption of red and processed meat and sugar-sweetened drinks, as well as cutting out alcohol. The number of cases of new cases of cancer is expected to rise by 58% by 2035 if we keep going with our current lifestyle.

To assess the impact of this intervention on cancer outcomes, investigators merged the data from the Oslo study with data from the Cancer Registry of Norway and the Norwegian Cause of Death Registry from 1972-1973 to the end of 2015.

"This article highlights that obesity, as well as significant weight gain in women, increases risk of certain cancers", she said.

"Living a healthy lifestyle in this day and age isn't always easy-it's often difficult, or hard to find time and this is one reason why we want governments to take action and create environments where it's easier for people to follow our recommendations and be healthy".

"Our cancer prevention recommendations work together as a blueprint to beat cancer that people can trust, because they are based on evidence that has now proved consistent for decades", commented Dr Giota Mitrou, the WCRF's director of research funding and external relations.

"Rather, different patterns of diet and physical activity throughout life combine to make you more or less susceptible to cancer".
