Apple is planning a new campus. Could it be in the Triangle?

This campus will be the fourth one for Apple. The report follows Apple confirming earlier this year it plans to build a new campus in the United States.

Apple is the latest tech giant to eye Northern Virginia for a large campus bringing tens of thousands of jobs. Though Apple previously said the campus would hold call-center workers, it seems possible that it would also have high-paying tech jobs.

This report doesn't necessarily mean that Apple didn't talk with Virginia officials.

Meanwhile, North Carolina is still in the running, specifically the Research Triangle Park.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, Fuqua '88, may have been visiting North Carolina last week for more than a commencement speech at Duke. This increase in Apple's employee headcount would go a long way towards fulfilling the company's goal of investing $30 billion in the US and creating upwards of 20,000 new jobs over the next five years.

Apple's decision to open a new headquarters in North Carolina is reportedly a "done deal" as soon as a bill is passed approving a series of incentives for Apple. The officials have proposed several possible locations for the new Apple headquarters, with two of the locations also offered to Amazon. Both Arizona and North Carolina are reportedly being considered by the Cupertino firm and both states are fighting to make sure that they are chosen. Although it has many competitors, Northern Virginia has three separate developmental sites selected as finalists in Amazon's consideration, so it's one of the front-runners.

North Carolina Speaker of the House Tim Moore did not respond to a request for comment.

Northern Virginia may also be a candidate, according to the Washington Post.

Although neither Amazon nor Apple has made any concrete decision about their new facilities, the two are going about it in different ways.

"We're narrowing the site selection for a new USA campus, and we look forward to sharing more information on that later this year", Cook said on April 29. Governor Cooper and the State General Assembly are now putting together an incentive package that includes 30 years of [county] property tax abatements and adjustments to employee withholding taxes (among other things) that are favorable to Apple.
